By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Emergency Management, FEMD, has begun preparedness plans as it constitutes an ad hoc committee to sensitize people on Earth Tremor after recent vibrations occurred on Saturday in some parts of Mpape, Katampe and Maitama in Abuja.

The Ag. Director General of the FCT FEMD, Engr Abdulraman Mohammed announced this after a recent meeting with stakeholders as he informed that this is to prepare and sensitize residents on what to during and after the Tremor.

Engr. Mohammed said that the earth tremor which first occurred on Saturday at Mpape exhibited no physical evidence of the rock movement.

Deputy Director, Solid Minerals,FCTA, Ulom Luke Ifop informed that the fault lines under the ground place stress on the rocks causing tremors.”

Ifop explained that the Tremor which has started will continue, adding that there is a seismic substation at Toro and at Katampe Hill, as he emphasized the need for a substation at Area 11, Asokoro and Maitama.

On his part, Water Consultant, Engr Taiwo Oyekan noted that human activities may have caused friction on the edges leading to the tremors.

Oyekan who stated that there must be a blast threshold by quarry companies, suggested that all rock blasting in the area must be put on hold for now.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, NGSA, has confirmed earth tremors in some parts of the FCT, urging residents not to panic, as it
described the tremors as low and posing no threat.

However , FEMD also appealed to residents of the affected areas to evacuate their buildings in the event of a vibration, and to stay away from electric poles during the vibrations.

The Ag. DG has appealed to residents to always call the 112 emergency toll-free number in any the event of an emergency.
