Following the crisis that plagued and nearly crippled basketball development in the country,the President, Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate withdrawal of Nigeria from all International Basketball competitions for a period of two years.
It was signed in a statement by the Director of Press and Public relations, Muhammed Manga.
The Minister of Youth and Sports development,Mr. Sunday Dare,said the withdrawal of Nigeria was to provide the Government the opportunity to revamp the sports from the grassroots and as well revive the domestic leagues.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry,Ismaila Abubakar, the Minister said the withdrawal will also allow for the setting up of an interim management committee (IMC) to oversee the management of Basketball ,Dare also reiterated the Government’s interest and commitment to the development of basketball and therefore enjoined players, officials,fans and stakeholders to remain calm as the Government far reaching initiatives to reposition, sustain the game of basketball in the interest of the country.
