FG threatens Gumi with arrest, condemns reckless statements

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning, asserting that no one is above the law, following controversial comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. Speaking after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris emphasized that provocative or reckless statements will not be tolerated.

Gumi’s recent offer to negotiate with abductors of kidnapped pupils in Kaduna State drew particular attention. He suggested that the President should allow him to facilitate their release, warning against repeating the mistake of refusing to negotiate with bandits.

In response, Minister Idris stated that while constructive suggestions for security improvement are welcome, reckless remarks will not be ignored. He confirmed that Gumi has previously been questioned by security agencies for his comments, reiterating that nobody is exempt from the law.

Efforts to reach Sheikh Gumi for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, Minister Idris clarified that no ransom was paid for the release of 137 kidnapped pupils from Kaduna and 17 Islamic school pupils from Sokoto. He expressed gratitude for the role of security services in securing their freedom and reassured Nigerians that those responsible for kidnappings would face justice.

Regarding conflicting reports on the number of children kidnapped from Kuriga, Kaduna State, Idris affirmed that all abducted children were safely rescued, with none remaining in captivity or harmed.

The government remains committed to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians, with a determination to end kidnapping and punish perpetrators, he concluded.
