A late-night fire incident damaged more than 10 shops at the popular Terminus Market, also known as Jos Main Market, in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The fire broke out at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, sending thick smoke into the night sky as flames spread through sections of the market and destroyed goods in several shops.
Emergency responders, including teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Federal Fire Service and the Plateau State Fire Service, were deployed to the scene. Their joint efforts helped bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further.
An eyewitness, Silas Lawrenzo, said the swift response of firefighters and emergency officials helped limit the damage and prevented what could have become a larger disaster in the busy commercial hub. “No lives were lost, and the quick response helped stop the fire from spreading across the market,” he said. A visit to the market on Sunday confirmed that more than 10 shops were affected by the blaze, with traders assessing the extent of the damage to their goods and property.
Market authorities said the exact cause of the fire had not been determined as of the time of filing this report. Terminus Market is one of the major trading centres in Jos, attracting traders and buyers from across Plateau State and neighbouring areas.
