Must read

The Foundation for Correction of Moral Decadence (FCMD) has called for attitudinal change and character overhaul for optimal productivity by Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) personnel.

The Foundation’s president, Dr Joseph Danley Obiechie, made the call during a special lecture organized for personnel at the NCoS headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.

The lecture comes less than a week after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the appointment of Ndidi Sylvester Nwakuche as Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following the retirement of Haliru Nababa from the service.

Speaking at the event, Obiechie stressed that the good performances of officers of the Service are proportional to their attitudes, noting that if there is no change in the ways things are done currently progress will continue to be retarded.

He stressed that Nigeria is blessed in diverse ways and as such it does not experience many natural disasters and can boast of massive human capital but has gotten to the point where it must prioritize attitudinal change and character overhaul in public service.

Obiechie tasked personnel of NCoS to inculcate fear of God; Love; Time consciousness; Respect for one another; Humility, and peace of mind in the discharge of their duties.

He commended the Acting Comptroller General of NCoS, Nwakuche for punctuality, noting that it signifies discipline and character of greatness as a leader, while urging NCoS officers to treat inmates with human face and kindness.

His words: “In this part of the world, attitudinal change is alien but it is essential for national progress and prosperity. The point Nigeria has gotten is at a stage where we must do a character overhaul.

“There must be an attitudinal change in the way personnel do things and and conduct themselves. Hence love and fear of God are very important.

“Staff of NCoS must show kindness to inmates, senior officers should treat their subordinates with humility and personnel must assume the position of counselors when it comes to inmates.

Obiechie called on NCoS personnel to eschew corruption, compromise of standards, and selfishness. Adding that Muslims and Christians in the service to replicate the teaching of their religious groups in the discharge of their duties.

On his part, the Acting Comptroller General NCoS, Nwakuche stated that the lecture which was the first after taking charge of the reigns was important as attitude is cardinal and strategic to productivity.

“I want to bring something different to the service, I want to bring change to what has been done before hence the need for a change of attitude in the workplace,” Nwakuche stated.

Participants after the lecture lauded the Foundation for Correction of Moral Decadence (FCMD) and expressed great delight in the enlightenment.
