Functional Streetlights in Abuja Save $8 Billion Yearly on Repairs, Block Saboteurs — Wike

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Minister Barr. Nysome Wike has said that installation of streetlights in Abuja would save 8 billion dollars for yearly repairs which are sponsored by political saboteurs and merchants of generators.

Wike said this on Thursday at the official flag-off of the construction of Arterial Road N1 from Wuye District to Ring 11.

He said, “They will fight you. There are those from outside who believe that it is their traditional birthright to sell generators. They will fight you.”

“There are those politicians whose duty every time they put in streetlights is to fight you.”

The minister blasted such saboteurs of government efforts, adding that he cannot be discouraged, but he is prepared to support the president.

” I am prepared to support and help Mr. President to achieve this for this country, and to get to where we are supposed to be.”
Wike further warned those usually tampering with streetlights after installation to stop doing so, or they would be arrested.
He announced that the new streetlights will come with security gadgets that will show if anyone is tampering with them to secure them.

So nothing like everyday repair of streetlights; in a year we pay not less than 8 billion dollars. But with this one, now the companies will maintain it for 4 years; we will not pay any money again, he emphasized.

For the interest of the people of Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s in achieving infrastructural development, he reaffirmed.

Also, the minister who officially flagged off the construction of the construction of Arterial road N1 from Wuye District to Ring 11,thanked President Tinubu’s for his concern in changing the narrative of Abuja for the interest of its residents.
