The first lady of Kebbi State, Hajia Zainab Nasare has inaugurated a Technical Working Committee on Gender-Based Violence, GBV, to tackle the prevalence of the menace in the state.
Hajia Nasare in her inaugural address during the ceremony recently in Birin Kebbi emphasized the need for collective action to eradicate the prevalence of all forms of gender-based violence in the state.
She therefore called on Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, the Media, and other stakeholders to work together to achieve positive results in the fight against this societal menace.
According to the first lady, gender-based violence goes beyond just rape, as it impacts the overall wellbeing of women.
She also commended the efforts of the TWG members in raising public awareness about gender-based violence and ensuring the prosecution of offenders.
The Secretary of the TWG, Mallam Nasir revealed that fifty rapists have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by Special Courts established to handle rape cases in the state between January and May of this year.
He attributed this success to the unwavering support of first lady Zainab Nasare.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Halima Hassan Kamba, will serve as the Vice Chairperson of the TWG, along with eleven other members who will work towards eliminating gender-based violence in Kebbi State.
With the dedication and commitment of all stakeholders, the fight against gender-based violence in Kebbi State is expected to yield positive results, the first lady stated.
