Former Plateau State Governor and Senator, Jonah David Jang, has reaffirmed the stability and unity of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State following the resignation and defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the All Progressives Congress (APC).Senator Jang made this known on Friday in Jos while reacting to Gov Mutfwang’s formal resignation from the PDP, an event that has sparked political discussions across the state. The former governor assured party members and the public that the PDP remains cohesive, strong, and committed to its democratic ideals despite the development.In a statement signed by Clinton Garuba, Media Consultant to Senator Jang, the former governor said his attention had been drawn to the official resignation notice submitted by Governor Mutfwang to the PDP.
According to the statement, Senator Jang acknowledged the governor’s decision to withdraw from the PDP and join the APC, noting that the move was presented as part of Mutfwang’s personal conviction toward what he described as purposeful leadership and service delivery. The statement further revealed that Governor Mutfwang had earlier informed Senator Jang of his intention to join the ruling party, explaining that he believed the decision was in the best interest of Plateau State. Despite the governor’s exit, Senator Jang said the PDP leadership in Plateau State remains united and focused. He joined the state party leadership in reassuring PDP members, supporters, and stakeholders that the party is stable, inclusive, and well-positioned to continue playing a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic development.“
The PDP in Plateau State remains strong, liberal, and firmly rooted in democratic values,” the statement said. “The party will continue to engage constructively with its members, strengthen internal democracy, and advance policies and programmes that promote inclusive governance and national development.” Senator Jang urged PDP members and supporters across the state to remain confident, calm, and committed to the party’s ideals, stressing that the defection of one individual does not diminish the PDP’s institutional strength or relevance.
Addressing Governor Mutfwang directly, the former governor extended goodwill and best wishes to him in his future political endeavours. He described himself as a father figure to the governor and noted that his doors remain open whenever counsel or guidance is needed. Senator Jang also advised Governor Mutfwang to remain focused on serving the people of Plateau State, emphasizing that political power ultimately belongs to the electorate who entrusted him with leadership.“ He is urged to continue working for the betterment of Plateau State and its people, who voted him into office, because ultimately, power lies in their hands,” the statement added.
The former governor also had words for those who may choose to follow Governor Mutfwang on his new political path. He charged them to place the collective interest of Plateau State above party loyalty or personal considerations. Senator Jang expressed hope that, regardless of political affiliations or decisions, Plateau State would ultimately benefit from the actions and choices of its political actors.The Gov Mutfwang resignation has marked a significant moment in Plateau State politics, but PDP leaders insist the party remains united, resilient, and prepared for future political contests.
