From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has expressed deep condolences to the family of Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, co-founder of Newswatch magazine, following his death. The governor also commiserated with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the wider media community over the loss.In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Ismaila Isah, Governor Ododo described the late Mohammed as an elder statesman and a pioneer of modern investigative journalism in Nigeria. The governor noted that Mohammed was a proud son of Kogi State from Dekina Local Government Area whose contributions to national development went beyond the media industry.“

As a co-founder of the iconic Newswatch magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed belonged to a rare generation of journalists who redefined courage, professionalism, and integrity in Nigerian journalism,” Ododo said.He added that Mohammed’s work helped shape public discourse and strengthened democratic accountability during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

Governor Ododo recalled that the establishment of Newswatch in the mid-1980s by Mohammed, alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese, marked a defining moment in Nigerian media practice.According to him, the magazine set enduring standards for investigative reporting, editorial independence, and fearless journalism that continue to influence the profession today.

Beyond journalism, the governor acknowledged Mohammed’s record of public service, including his tenure as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also highlighted the late journalist’s commitment to the development of Kogi State, describing him as a mentor, bridge-builder, and respected voice of conscience in national affairs.“ His love for Kogi State was evident in his dedication to its growth and his willingness to serve in various capacities whenever called upon,” Ododo said. The governor prayed that Almighty Allah grant the deceased eternal rest and comfort his family, colleagues, and all those affected by the loss.
