Government Plans School Safety Corps as 137 Abducted Pupils Regain Freedom in Kaduna

The Federal Government is set to establish a School Safety Protection Squad, comprising newly recruited personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) across the nation, aimed at curbing the abduction of schoolchildren. This initiative follows the recent release of 137 abducted pupils from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School Kuriga in Kaduna.

Hammed Abodunrin, the Commander of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, revealed this plan in an interview. He emphasized the urgent need for improved security measures to ensure the safety of students nationwide.

The Defense Headquarters confirmed the successful rescue operation, with 137 pupils freed from captivity in Zamfara State and slated for handover to the Kaduna State Government.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu commended the efforts leading to the release of the Kuriga schoolchildren and other recent kidnap victims, underscoring the significance of collaboration between the federal and state governments on security matters.

Despite the joyous news of the children’s safe return, concerns remain about the fate of the remaining abducted students and the deceased teacher. The Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, acknowledged the tragic loss of the teacher and expressed gratitude for the concerted efforts that led to the children’s rescue.

In response to these developments, presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar lauded the successful rescue operation while advocating for proactive measures to address the nation’s security challenges and prevent future incidents of mass abduction.

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance security in Kaduna State, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a Special Intervention Squad comprising 200 officers and personnel. The squad’s arrival underscores the commitment to tackling insecurity in the region and ensuring the safety of citizens.

While the rescued pupils are set to reunite with their families, the government continues to explore strategies to safeguard schools and communities, emphasizing the need for comprehensive security measures and swift action to prevent further incidents of abduction and violence.
