By Daniel Edu

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebnji, has issued a formal apology to the state’s athletes who participated in the 2023 National Youths Games in Asaba, Delta State. The governor expressed his regrets over the poor treatment the athletes received from Ekiti State Sports Council officials during the event.

The apology was made during a reception for the athletes in Ado Ekiti, where Governor Oyebanji acknowledged the embarrassment caused by the conduct of the sports council officials. He described the athletes as “Great Ekiti Ambassadors” and assured them of financial rewards for their achievements.

Ekiti athletes had won a total of seven medals, including two gold, two silver, and three bronze, at the National Youths Games. However, they faced criticism and embarrassment when they were seen wearing unfitting attire during the march past for the Games’ opening ceremony.

Governor Oyebanji took responsibility for the inappropriate behavior of the sports council officials, emphasizing that his government was committed to the development of sports in the state. He acknowledged that the incident had highlighted the need for improvements in the state’s sports infrastructure and support for young athletes.

The Governor expressed his gratitude to the athletes for their impressive performances and assured them of his administration’s support to help them excel in their respective fields. He also mentioned plans to establish a state sports commission and improve sports facilities in Ekiti.

Additionally, Governor Oyebanji thanked his wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, and the wife of the former Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, for their assistance and contributions to the athletes during their time in Asaba.
