Governor Mutfwang Celebrates Gen. Gowon’s 90th Birthday

By Laiatu Augustine Bamaiyi

In a heartfelt celebration of faith and gratitude, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, joined former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, GCFR (Rtd), for a family thanksgiving service commemorating his 90th birthday. The event took place at St. Matthew’s Church, Diocese of Abuja, Anglican Communion, in Maitama, Abuja.

The church resonated with joyous praise and worship as attendees gathered to honor and express gratitude for the exemplary life of the revered statesman.

During the service, Gen. Gowon, a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s history and unity, delivered the New Testament reading from Philippians 2:1-12. His heartfelt message resonated with all present as he thanked the church for the opportunity to worship together and acknowledged the many who traveled from near and far to celebrate this significant milestone.

Gen. Gowon expressed special gratitude to Governor Mutfwang for his presence, particularly after the Governor’s recent official trip to Sweden with the Vice President. He fondly reflected on his connections to both Plateau and Kaduna States, emphasizing his unwavering loyalty to Nigeria and urging all citizens to actively seek peace and harmony.

The sermon, titled “Have the Mind of Christ,” was delivered by the Resident Bishop, Ven. Amb. Dr. Tiwatope A. Elias-Fatile. He encouraged believers to embody the character of Christ in their everyday lives, underscoring that the essence of Christ is reflected through humility, obedience, holiness, love, and forgiveness, noting that a life without Christ lacks true meaning.

Governor Mutfwang praised Gen. Gowon for his steadfast love and dedication to fostering peace and unity in Nigeria, affirming that the people of Plateau State stand proudly alongside him in this joyous celebration.

The event culminated in special prayers for the former Head of State, invoking God’s continued blessings, strength, and wisdom to guide future generations toward a united Nigeria. The celebration concluded with the ceremonial cutting of a specially prepared birthday cake, honoring Gen. Gowon’s humility and his selfless service to both God and humanity.
