In Northern Nigeria, a subtle but significant shift in leadership is underway, marked by a cadre of dynamic and forward-thinking leaders such as Mohammed Bago, Babagana Zulum, Dikko Radda, and Uba Sani. These leaders are championing change, development, and a departure from religious and ethnic prejudices, signaling a quiet revolution in the region.
Governor Radda of Katsina State has notably taken a firm stand against the scourge of banditry, rejecting the notion of negotiation with criminal elements. He asserts that banditry has become a lucrative enterprise for some individuals, including those within government and security circles. Radda’s principled refusal to engage in negotiations reflects a recognition of the futility of such efforts, citing the intricate network of bandit camps and the lack of unity among their leaders.
The governor’s stance contrasts with previous approaches, exemplified by his predecessor, Aminu Masari, and former Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, who experimented with negotiations but found them ultimately ineffective. Likewise, the federal government’s deradicalization programs for repentant Boko Haram insurgents have faced setbacks, with some militants reverting to violence despite rehabilitation efforts.
