Governor Sule Pledges Greater Support for Sports Development in Nasarawa state at 65th birthday Match

From Abel Zwànke, Lafia

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing sports development in Nasarawa State, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering unity and youth empowerment.

Speaking during a novelty football match organized to celebrate his 65th birthday at the Lafia City Stadium at the weekend, the governor highlighted ongoing efforts to promote local talents and create opportunities for global exposure.

Governor Sule commended stakeholders for their contributions to the state’s sports sector, including the Nasarawa United FC and Nasarawa Amazons FC. He announced plans to settle outstanding issues such as local government workers’ minimum wage and pledged continued support for grassroots sports.

“We are committed to ensuring that the youth of Nasarawa have opportunities to excel through sports. My administration will work tirelessly to provide better facilities, support teams like Nasarawa United and the Amazons, and offer our talented players international exposure,” Sule said.

The governor’s comments came after Mr. Mojeed Ibrahim, representing Nigerian-Canadian philanthropist Mr. Solomon Bamidele David, announced a plan to provide five players from Nasarawa’s football teams with professional opportunities in Europe and beyond.

Governor Sule also praised the Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, for his leadership in settling key labour issues during the governor’s absence and for his outstanding performance during the match. “Dr. Akabe has shown exceptional skills both on and off the pitch, proving his dedication to the state,” Sule said.

The event highlighted the administration’s dedication to using sports as a tool for unity, empowerment, and economic growth. Governor Sule assured stakeholders of continued collaboration to develop sports infrastructure and create more opportunities for Nasarawa’s youth.

The match, organized by Eche Amos and supported by Mr. Solomon Bamidele David, ended with the Governor’s Team defeating the Deputy Speaker’s Team 3-0, with Dr. Akabe scoring a brace and Hon. Samuel Kafu Emgba netting the third goal.

The celebration concluded with a dinner at the old Presidential Lodge, where dignitaries praised Governor Sule’s leadership and commitment to sports development.
