Governor Yusuf Commiserates With Niger State Over Tanker Explosion Tragedy

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

The tragic incident, which occurred on the morning of Saturday, January 18, 2025, claimed the lives of at least 90 people, including a pregnant woman and several children. The tragedy has left the entire nation in mourning.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were burnt beyond recognition while attempting to scoop fuel from the crashed petrol tanker. Over 50 others sustained varying degrees of burns and are currently receiving medical care in various hospitals.

Describing the loss as a national tragedy, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf lamented the avoidable nature of the incident and called for urgent measures to prevent similar occurrences.

“This heartbreaking event is a grim reminder of the fragility of human life and the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safety,” the governor said.

“On behalf of the government and people of Kano State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the Niger State government. We mourn with you and pray for Allah’s mercy on the departed souls and a speedy recovery for the injured.”

The governor emphasized the need for public education on the dangers of scooping fuel from accident scenes and urged relevant authorities to enforce safety measures on highways to protect lives.

The explosion, attributed by eyewitnesses to a speeding petrol tanker that crashed at the busy Dikko Junction, has left the community in shock and despair.

Despite conflicting reports on the death toll, with some accounts suggesting over 80 casualties, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that at least 80 lives were lost.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for heightened safety awareness and stricter regulations to prevent such catastrophic events in the future.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to supporting efforts that prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and exercise caution in such situations.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear this immense loss.
