Amid worsening extreme economic hardship, the poorest of the poor Nigerians have turned to sugarcane chaff for daily cooking of their meals, following the escalating price of charcoals which had been the cheapest alternative to fire woods, kerosene and cooking gas.

Most less privileged families in Kaduna had relied mostly on fire wood and black charcoals for their cooking since the removal of fuel subsidy under the current regime of President Bola Tinubu, in May 2023.

A small rubber bag of charcoal which was between N100 and N200 previously went up to N500 and N600 and more in most places, higher than the cost many families could afford owing to consistent increased in pump price of fuel.

Our correspondent reports that bigger bag of charcoal previously sold for between N5,000 and N7000 respectively have now skyrocket beyond reach, families.

Most families and residents who spoke to our correspondent in anonymity revealed that they have resorted to prayers, believing that only God almighty can save them from the present endless hardship in the country.

Recalled that Kerosene, cooking Gas, fire woods and other sources of cooking materials had gone up above affordability of the poor.
