Heavy Security Presence in Rivers During #October1Fearless Protest

By   Milcah   Tanimu

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, heavy security presence marked the October 1 protest, creating palpable tension as citizens participated in the nationwide #October1Fearless protest. This demonstration follows the #EndBadGovernance protest that saw youth taking to the streets for 10 days in August, demanding accountability and improved governance.

As the protest unfolded, large gatherings of suspected anti-protesters appeared at the Federal Secretariat and Pleasure Park, locations familiar to previous protesters. Observers noted that while these groups did not engage in active demonstrations, their presence led to an increased deployment of security personnel in the area.

The Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, Civil Defence, and other agencies patrolled the state capital to maintain order. Despite the heavy security, businesses continued to operate normally, with commuters moving freely throughout the city. At the time of reporting, no violence or disruption of peace was recorded.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the protest highlights ongoing concerns regarding governance in Nigeria, emphasizing the citizens’ call for accountability and reform.
