How Long Do Pillows Last? Experts Reveal When to Replace Them

Your pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep, but did you know it has an expiration date? Neglecting to replace pillows regularly can lead to health issues such as neck strain, acne, and even allergic reactions. To maintain your physical and mental health, it’s crucial to know when to change your pillow.

Experts recommend replacing your pillow every one to two years to ensure it remains clean, supportive, and allergy-free. However, the lifespan of your pillow largely depends on its material. Latex pillows can last up to three years, while polyester pillows may need replacing after just one year.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Pillow
If you’re unsure whether your pillow is still up to the task, look out for these common signs:

  • Loss of Support: If your pillow no longer provides proper head and neck support, it’s time for a replacement.
  • Neck Pain: Waking up with tension headaches or neck soreness is a clear indicator.
  • Flatness: If your pillow feels flat and uncomfortable, it’s time for a new one.
  • Excessive Yellowing or Stains: Stains, yellowing, or persistent odors mean it’s time to discard the pillow.
  • Frequent Fluffing: If you find yourself constantly fluffing your pillow to restore shape, it’s no longer doing its job.

Tests to Determine Pillow Condition
If you’re uncertain whether your pillow is still good, there are simple tests to check its condition:

  • Saddlebag Test: Place your pillow over your outstretched arm. If it falls flat or loses its shape, it’s time to replace it.
  • Fold Test: For synthetic and hollow fiber pillows, fold the pillow in half. If it doesn’t return to its original shape, it’s no longer supportive.
  • Press Test: Press your foam pillow. If it takes too long to return to its shape or doesn’t bounce back, consider getting a new one.

Regularly replacing your pillow will ensure better sleep quality and overall health. Don’t wait until your pillow is beyond repair—make it a habit to check your pillows and replace them when necessary.
