The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly acting as President Bola Tinubu’s “attack dog” to silence opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The criticism follows the EFCC’s interrogation and detention of former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator Aminu Tambuwal over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion.
HURIWA alleged that the arrest is part of a wider plot to intimidate and weaken the opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Tinubu in 2027.
The group accused the EFCC of turning a blind eye to corruption cases involving high-ranking members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who defected from the opposition, while opposition leaders face swift prosecution.
HURIWA warned that unchecked abuse of state power by the current administration could damage Nigeria’s democratic framework.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group called on the National Assembly to summon EFCC leadership to explain the rationale behind its actions.
It also urged the international community to take note of what it described as state-sponsored political persecution disguised as an anti-corruption campaign.
