IG Urges Police Trust Fund to Prioritise Welfare of Junior Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to focus more welfare interventions on junior officers, citing their central role in frontline operations.

According to a statement issued by Force spokesman Anthony Placid, the IGP made the call while receiving the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, and members of the Fund’s board during a courtesy visit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Disu emphasised that officers in lower ranks carry the heaviest operational responsibilities nationwide and require structured and consistent welfare support.

He also reiterated his commitment to building a more responsive and technology-driven Nigeria Police Force, noting that improved housing, accessible healthcare, and prompt payment of insurance and welfare benefits are key to boosting morale and efficiency.

In his remarks, Sheidu reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to supporting the police through targeted interventions in welfare, training, and operational capacity. He highlighted achievements including over 100 training programmes for more than 13,000 officers and the execution of over 170 infrastructure projects nationwide.

The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the police and the Trust Fund, amid broader reforms aimed at improving service delivery and addressing the welfare needs of officers, particularly those on frontline duties.
