Illegal Mining Heightens Insecurity in Nigeria, Says Lawmaker

Senator Ekong Sampson, representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district at the National Assembly, has highlighted the role of illegal mining in exacerbating security challenges across Nigeria. He also pointed out collusion between Nigerians and foreign elements in the exploitation of the nation’s mining resources, leading to significant revenue loss.

In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Mr. Samuel Udoma, on Tuesday, Senator Sampson pledged to intensify investigations into the mining sector to safeguard the country’s interests. As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, he emphasized the need to review and streamline mining activities to revitalize the solid minerals sector.

The Senate, responding to the dwindling revenue from solid minerals development, mandated the Solid Minerals Committee late last year to investigate various aspects, including the causes of revenue decline, policy implementation, and the impact of illegal mining activities. Senator Sampson reiterated the Senate’s condemnation of collusion between locals and foreign entities, which deprives the nation of its mineral wealth without corresponding revenue gains.

The recent explosion in Ibadan, attributed to irresponsible mining practices, underscores the urgency of addressing illegal mining, which has become a significant security concern, threatening lives and property. Senator Sampson reaffirmed his committee’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and revising existing mining legislation to align with international best practices.

Furthermore, he condemned the reluctance of some industry players to cooperate with the committee’s investigations, warning that legal threats would not deter the Senate from its inquiries. Senator Sampson announced plans to convene regular roundtable discussions involving relevant agencies, experts, and stakeholders to explore strategies for enhancing operations in the mining sector.

The statement concluded with Senator Sampson’s assurance of the Senate’s unwavering determination to address the challenges posed by illegal mining and promote sustainable development in the solid minerals sector.
