“I’m Still Very Much in Charge”: Austin Eguavoen Addresses Misleading Headlines

Coach Austin Eguavoen, the Interim Manager of the Super Eagles, has refuted recent reports suggesting that he has stepped down from his role. In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom after the team’s return to Abuja following their goalless draw against Rwanda in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Eguavoen clarified the situation.

Clearing the Air on Misleading Headlines

Eguavoen expressed disappointment over the false reports, emphasizing that his comments were misrepresented. “It’s quite unfortunate that people trigger something that’s not correct,” he told SportsBoom.com. He clarified that he merely mentioned plans to discuss future strategies with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) after the two qualifying games, not that he was stepping down.

**Concerns About Media Misrepresentation**

The former international was candid about his concerns over how the media portrayed his statements. “When I saw that story, I was worried and concerned,” Eguavoen said, stressing that the reports were inaccurate and misleading. He reassured fans and stakeholders, stating, “I’m still very much in charge.”

Current Role and Responsibilities

Eguavoen reaffirmed his position within the NFF, where he serves as the Technical Director, currently responsible for managing the Super Eagles. “I’m the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, saddled with the responsibilities of taking charge of the Super Eagles at this moment, and that’s where we are,” he confirmed.

Insights on Player Selection and Game Time

Addressing questions about the limited playing time for certain players, including Fulham’s Alex Iwobi, Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, and Udinese’s Maduka Okoye, Eguavoen explained the challenges of selecting from a talented squad. “We have 23 quality, talented players from which we can pick at any given time,” he said, noting that not all players can be fielded in every game.

He acknowledged the frustration that comes with limited game time but emphasized the strong unity and understanding within the team. “If you are called to play, you play. If you are not called, you stick to supporting the team on the sidelines,” Eguavoen concluded.

Eguavoen’s comments aim to put to rest any doubts about his commitment to the Super Eagles and clarify the situation for fans and the media.
