INEC Urges Peaceful and Credible Ondo State Governorship Election

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has called for a peaceful and credible Ondo State governorship election. It is scheduled for November 16, 2024.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure on Thursday, Yakubu assured the public that INEC is fully prepared. He highlighted the commission’s efforts to ensure transparency, such as voter registration and distributing Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).

Yakubu revealed that 2,053,061 registered voters are expected to participate. INEC has also uploaded information on collected and uncollected PVCs for the 3,933 polling units in the state.

Security is another priority for INEC. Yakubu stressed its importance and mentioned the commission’s collaboration with security agencies. They have developed a comprehensive security plan for the election. INEC will also deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to ensure transparency.

Professor Kunle Ajayi, INEC’s National Commissioner, urged political parties to behave responsibly. He emphasized that elections are about competing ideas, not zero-sum games.

AIG Abiodun Oladimeji Asabi, representing the Inspector-General of Police, also spoke on security. He said the success of the election depends on peace and order. Any breach could compromise the process. The police will deploy 22,239 officers with support from other agencies. AIG Asabi urged stakeholders to follow democratic principles and warned that violations would face strict prosecution.

In conclusion, INEC remains committed to a transparent, secure, and peaceful election. All stakeholders are encouraged to ensure a smooth process.
