International Women’s Day: Betta Edu Calls for Stronger Support for Women and Vulnerable Groups

By Jabiru Hassan

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Betta Edu, has called for stronger policies and programmes to empower women and support vulnerable populations across Nigeria’s three tiers of government.

Edu made the appeal in Abuja while commemorating International Women’s Day alongside Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other women leaders and advocates.

In a statement issued during the event, Edu said the global observance provides an opportunity to recognise the role of women in social and economic development and to renew commitments toward gender equality. She noted that the theme of the celebration, “Give to Gain,” highlights the need for sustained investment in women and girls through education, economic opportunities, and social protection.

According to Edu, empowering women remains essential for inclusive growth and community development, as women continue to play key roles in strengthening families, driving economic activity, and supporting social progress. She also emphasised the importance of expanding programmes that support vulnerable groups, including women and children, to ensure they have access to opportunities that improve their well-being.

Edu urged government institutions, civil society organisations, and development partners to deepen collaboration aimed at advancing women’s rights and expanding support systems for disadvantaged populations. She added that International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create societies where women and girls can thrive with dignity and equal opportunities.
