‘It was a huge mistake’ — Nigerian-born German star Karim Adeyemi apologises over illegal weapons case

Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has issued a public apology after being fined €450,000 for the illegal possession of prohibited weapons.

The case surfaced during the international break and led to Adeyemi’s omission from Germany’s 6–0 World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia. Reports indicate that both the German Football Federation (DFB) and Borussia Dortmund were unaware of the investigation until it appeared in the media.

German prosecutors said Adeyemi had come into possession of weapons that require a permit under national law.

Adeyemi’s apology

Addressing the issue on Instagram, the winger admitted he acted carelessly and expressed deep regret.

“At the beginning of 2024, out of carelessness and without really thinking about what I was doing, I ordered a so-called ‘mystery box’ online,” he wrote.
“It contained items not permitted under weapons legislation. Many months later, the package was delivered and ended up unopened at the police station.
“Nevertheless, it was a huge mistake — one I am very sorry about, that cost me dearly, and that I deeply regret.”

Adeyemi added that he understands the responsibility that comes with being a public figure.

“I know I am in the public eye and have a role-model function. I did not live up to that. I have learned more from this than I can express, and I promise to avoid such mistakes in the future.”

Dortmund’s reaction

Borussia Dortmund’s managing director, Lars Ricken, also commented on the matter.

“We took the situation very seriously and have since spoken with Karim at length,” Ricken told Sky Sport.
“He deeply regrets his mistake. It must also be noted that he paid a significant fine, no one was harmed, and he still has no criminal record.”
