JUST IN: COAS Lagbaja Healthy, Speaks With CDS Musa — Defence Headquarters

[By Abigail Philip David]

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, recently spoke with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who is reported to be in good health and currently on a well-deserved vacation.

In a statement released on Monday by DHQ spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, it was clarified that despite recent speculation about Lagbaja’s absence from public engagements due to alleged health issues, he is simply on his 2024 annual leave.

The DHQ also refuted rumors that an acting Chief of Army Staff had been appointed, stressing that no such appointment exists. “The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave,” the statement reiterated.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) emphasized that its operations are professionally managed, and all Service Chiefs are actively performing their constitutional duties. The statement also clarified that Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine updates to the COAS in line with military protocol during his absence.

Brigadier General Gusau urged the public to ignore false rumors and encouraged media outlets to verify information with appropriate authorities before disseminating unverified reports. He added, “The COAS is hale and hearty and will resume his duties once his leave is over.”

Furthermore, the DHQ warned against any calls for a military takeover, labeling such actions as treasonous under the Nigerian Constitution. The statement reaffirmed the military’s unwavering commitment to democracy and loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain focused on their constitutional responsibility of protecting the nation’s sovereignty, and the current peace is a testament to the President’s support and the leadership of the AFN,” Gusau stated. He also noted that the AFN and other security agencies have been directed to take necessary action against individuals or groups advocating unconstitutional changes in governance.
