The United Nations has announced a $6 million donation to aid victims of the recent flood in Maiduguri, Borno State. In a statement on Tuesday, Mohammed Fall, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, confirmed that a joint mission of UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Nigeria Red Cross Society visited the city over the weekend to assess the situation.
The flood, triggered by an overflow of the Alau Dam, has worsened conditions for many residents, some of whom had already been displaced multiple times due to ongoing conflict and insecurity in the region.
Fall noted that the UN and its partners are providing hot meals, air-dropping food in areas inaccessible by road, and delivering water and sanitation services to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks. Additionally, they are distributing water purification tablets, hygiene and dignity kits for women and girls, and offering emergency health and shelter services.
He also emphasized that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is actively working with donors to secure further funding to support relief efforts.
