Kaduna Primary Teachers Decry Hardship Over Non-Implementation of New Minimum Wage

…Urges Tinubu to Intervene
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Primary school teachers in Kaduna State have lamented the severe hardship they face due to the non-implementation of the new minimum wage in the state.

In an open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, dated January 23, 2025, and made available to journalists in Kaduna, the teachers voiced their grievances.

The letter, signed by “Concerned Primary School Teachers of Kaduna State” to avoid victimization, highlighted their struggles.

“We, the primary school teachers of Kaduna State, humbly write to bring to your attention the ongoing hardship we face due to the non-implementation of the new minimum wage in our state.

“Despite the federal government’s progressive step to increase the national minimum wage to N70,000, we, the teachers responsible for shaping the future of our nation, have been excluded from its benefits.

“Primary school education forms the bedrock of Nigeria’s development, yet the failure to adopt the new minimum wage in Kaduna State leaves us struggling to meet basic needs and demotivated in carrying out our duties.”

Recommendations and Requests
The teachers outlined three key recommendations for immediate implementation:
1. Directive to Kaduna State Government: The federal government should issue a directive to ensure the state implements the new minimum wage for all primary school teachers.
2. Timely and Regular Payment: Teachers’ salaries must be paid promptly and consistently to reduce financial strain and boost morale.
3. Accountability Mechanism: Local government chairmen should be held accountable for implementing federal directives. This includes imposing sanctions and reviewing leadership in cases of non-compliance.

The letter also suggested administrative or financial penalties for officials who fail to comply and proposed replacing local government chairmen who neglect their responsibilities.

The teachers emphasized the broader implications of this neglect, stating that the quality of education in the state is being compromised.

“Mr. President, your intervention will not only alleviate our financial burdens but also restore our confidence in the federal government’s dedication to justice and equity.

“By addressing this issue, you will reaffirm the critical importance of education and the teachers who provide it in building a brighter future for Nigeria,” the letter concluded.

The teachers expressed hope that President Tinubu would take swift and decisive action to address their plight and improve their working conditions.
