Kaduna Residents Raise Concerns Over Street Water Leakages Amid Supply Boost

Residents in parts of Kaduna State have raised concerns over widespread street water leakages, despite recent efforts by the Uba Sani administration to improve water supply across the state. A survey by this reporter identified several affected areas, including Ungwan Boro (ECWA Hausa area) and parts of Sabon Tasha in Chikun Local Government Area, where burst pipes have left water flowing freely along streets. Residents in these communities reported that, despite visible leakages, many households still lack consistent pipe-borne water for drinking and domestic use.

Findings suggest that aging and poorly maintained water pipes, alongside recent road construction activities, may be contributing to the problem. Some residents expressed concern over water wastage and the potential health and environmental risks.

The development comes amid official reports of improved water supply in Kaduna. The Commissioner for Public Works and Infrastructure, Ibrahim Hamza, recently said the state government’s investment in the water sector has led to increased supply in areas such as Tudun Wada, Malali, Unguwan Rimi, Barnawa, and Narayi. He attributed the improvement to the rehabilitation of the Malali Water Works and ongoing upgrades at other treatment plants. Hamza also disclosed that the Zaria and Kafanchan water works are operational, while the rehabilitation of the Makera Water Treatment Plant is expected to further boost supply.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Kaduna State Water Corporation on the reported leakages were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
