Kano State’s Political Crossroads: Choosing Between Democracy and Autocracy

By Dr. Sagir S. Buhari FCIA

Kano State, a pivotal player in Nigeria’s political landscape and a historical center of Islamic and Western education, holds a rich heritage dating back to the pre-colonial era. With a population nearing 20 million, Kano stands as one of Nigeria’s most populous states, comprising 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 484 wards. Its diverse demographics and strategic importance make it a battleground for political parties.

From the iconic Kano Emirate to the military era, Kano’s political trajectory has been complex. As the state prepares for local government elections, the calls for transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles have never been louder.

A focal point in this landscape is Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s leadership, and its implications for democracy in Kano are worth examining. The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano has demonstrated clear signs of democratic abuse, with Kwankwaso favoring an autocratic decision-making process—evident in the recent candidate selection for the upcoming local elections.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusif’s reported frustrations and trip abroad underscore the internal crises within the NNPP. This democratic abuse has led to the erosion of trust, disillusionment of supporters, and compromised election legitimacy, weakening democratic norms.

The people of Kano deserve leadership that genuinely represents their interests. It’s time for Kwankwaso and the NNPP to embrace a more democratic and inclusive process.

The upcoming local elections risk being tainted by irregularities due to NNPP’s undemocratic tendencies. Kano residents must demand transparency and accountability and reject any attempts at election manipulation. Authorities, including the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), INEC, and international bodies, must ensure a free, fair, and transparent election.

Kano is blessed with eminent personalities who have shaped its political and social landscape—figures like the late Mallam Aminu Kano, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, and Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. These leaders’ legacies continue to inspire future generations.

Governor Yusif must now assert his leadership. Entrusted with a mandate from the people, he will be held accountable by both his constituents and history. The time for decisive action is now, as Kano moves towards a brighter future.

May God bless Kano State and Nigeria.
