KEDCO Enhances Power Supply, Partners for Embedded Generation to Strengthen Grid

Kano Electricity Distribution Plc. (KEDCO) has announced significant improvements in power supply following the repair and restoration of the Uguwaji-Apir 330kV Transmission Line 2, which had been out of service since October 21, 2024, due to vandalism. The successful restoration of line 2, alongside the earlier repair of line 1 on October 30, 2024, has enabled KEDCO to increase the load it can distribute to its customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states.

The Uguwaji-Apir 330kV double circuit transmission lines serve as an alternate power source after the recent vandalization of KEDCO’s primary bulk power supply from the Shiroro-Kaduna 330kV lines. As a result of the restoration, KEDCO is now able to offer more hours of power to its customers.

Mal Abubakar Yusuf, Managing Director/CEO of KEDCO, highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance energy security. In addition to strengthening the national grid supply, KEDCO is collaborating with state governments and mini-grid developers to reduce its reliance on the grid through embedded generation.

Yusuf further emphasized that Future Energies Africa (FEA), KEDCO’s core investor, is focused on improving the socio-economic conditions of the region by accelerating electrification projects. These projects support both federal and regulatory efforts for sustainable growth in Nigeria’s power sector.

The company’s *Utility 2.0* and *Safe Grid* projects, which are expected to generate over 100MW, are designed to boost energy security and reliability, complementing the bulk power supply from the national grid. Yusuf reaffirmed KEDCO’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), stressing that the success of TCN benefits everyone in the sector.

Sani Bala Sani, Head of Corporate Communications at KEDCO, reiterated that these efforts are part of the company’s ongoing commitment to improving power supply and contributing to the broader goals of Nigeria’s energy sector.
