Kogi Poly Final-Year Student Allegedly Dies During Abortion in Lokoja

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

A final-year student of Kogi State Polytechnic has reportedly died while attempting to abort a six-month pregnancy at a private clinic in Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 26th August, 2025, at a clinic located in Sarkin Noma community, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Sources told our correspondent that the deceased, said to be 26 years old, sought the services of the private clinic to terminate the pregnancy. Although the abortion was reportedly carried out, medical personnel at the facility could not stop the excessive bleeding that followed. She was said to have bled to death.

It was further gathered that the police were invited to the clinic. Officers documented the scene before evacuating the remains to the mortuary of the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Lokoja.

The owner of the clinic has since been arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Lokoja, for further investigation.

When contacted, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic said they were not aware of the incident. The Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, explained that the institution could not confirm the case because students are currently on holiday.

However, efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Williams Ovye, for confirmation were unsuccessful as his line was not accessible at the time of filing this report.
