Labour Protests at Kaduna Disco, Demands Rollback of Electricity Tariff

By Milcah Tanimu

The Organised Labour, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), staged a protest at the headquarters of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company in Kaduna. Their grievance stems from the recent increase in electricity tariffs for customers classified under Band ‘A’.

Headed by Kaduna NLC and TUC chairmen, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman and Comrade Alhassan Danfulani, the Labour members demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff hike. They denounced what they perceived as discrimination within the electricity sector, particularly through class-based differentiation in service provision.

Additionally, the Labour leaders urged the Federal Government to revert the privatisation of the distribution sub-sector of the electricity industry. They argued that the privatised distribution sub-sector has exploited Nigerians, prioritising profit over the welfare of underserved citizens.
