The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa while he was in Atlanta, USA. Thirty-two members of the Assembly voted for his removal, marking the end of his eight-year tenure.
Reasons for Impeachment
The lawmakers cited corruption, gross misconduct, and authoritarian leadership as reasons for the impeachment. One legislator said, “We’ve had enough.”
New Leadership
Obasa’s deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker. She made history as the first female Speaker in Lagos State. Hon. Fatai Mojeed was elected as Deputy Speaker.
Administrative Changes
The Assembly dissolved all standing committees. Clerk Olalekan Onafeko was suspended, and Abubakar Ottun was appointed as Acting Clerk.
Political Tensions and Controversies
Obasa’s impeachment came amid ongoing tensions with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These tensions escalated during the 2025 budget presentation. Obasa’s gubernatorial ambitions also strained his political alliances.
The Impeachment Motion
Hon. Femi Saheed moved the motion accusing Obasa of misappropriating funds and causing division. The motion was adopted unanimously via a voice vote.
Hon. Meranda’s Commitment
In her acceptance speech, Hon. Meranda vowed to lead with integrity and focus on the best interests of Lagos residents.
