Lagos Deploys Speed Cameras, Introduces ₦50,000 Fine for Violations

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to enhance traffic monitoring and curb overspeeding.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the initiative during a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the new installations will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other traffic management solutions.

“These checkpoint sites are strategically placed to detect overspeeding, a major cause of road accidents. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with an 80km/h speed limit, while another is at NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a 60km/h limit,” Osiyemi explained.

Additionally, two e-police sites have been installed at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to detect various traffic violations, including running red lights, illegal U-turns, and lane indiscipline.

Motorists caught violating speed limits will face a fine of ₦50,000, while running a red light will attract a ₦20,000 penalty. Offenders will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service department detailing the infraction and corresponding fine.

“The objective is not to punish drivers but to promote responsible driving and reduce road accidents,” Osiyemi emphasized.

Other officials present at the briefing included Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation Olawale Musa, representatives from Huawei Technologies, and key ministry directors.
