Lawmakers Dispute Existence of Executive Bill to Scrap Sharia and Customary Courts in Kaduna

Must read

Several members of the 9th Kaduna State House of Assembly have refuted claims made by the Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Zailani, that they rejected an Executive Bill aimed at abolishing both Sharia and customary courts in the state.

In a viral audio recording, the Speaker stated during a valedictory session of the House that the bill was brought by the former governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, and that it was rejected by the members. He expressed concerns that such a bill could lead to a severe crisis in the state and the country as a whole.

However, in response, Hon. Yusuf Salihu, a member of the 9th Assembly representing Kawo Constituency, along with other members, held a press conference in Kaduna to refute the Speaker’s allegations. They described the claims as “laughable” and denied the existence of any executive bill to scrap the Sharia and customary courts in the previous Assembly.

Hon. Salihu explained that the members thoroughly investigated the matter and found no evidence of such a bill. He added that the Speaker’s allegations were an attempt to tarnish the reputation of El-Rufai.

When asked about the delayed response, Hon. Salihu stated that they had to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure the veracity of the claims. He emphasized that the alleged bill was never registered, and they assumed it did not exist.

The lawmakers urged the Speaker to refrain from spreading misinformation and making unsubstantiated claims, particularly on sensitive matters like the administration of justice in the state. They called for responsible behavior and emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the institution.
