Lawyer to Post Restraining Order at MultiChoice Office Amid DSTV Tariff Hike

Must read

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has directed the posting of its interim order, restraining MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from increasing DSTV tariffs, at the company’s corporate headquarters and branches across Nigeria.

Chairman of the tribunal, Saratu Shafii, issued the order on April 29, 2024, stating that the document should also be sent to MultiChoice’s known email address, social media handles, and other public communication channels.

The interim order was granted in favor of Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade, who challenged MultiChoice’s recent announcement to raise tariffs on its DStv and Gotv packages starting from May 1.

Onifade sought an interim injunction to prevent MultiChoice from implementing the tariff increase pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

The tribunal granted the order following an ex parte motion moved by Onifade’s counsel, Ejiro Awaritoma, on April 29. However, the bailiff alleged that MultiChoice staff at the Abuja office refused to receive the documents for service.

As a result, the tribunal issued an order of substituted service on MultiChoice, directing that the ex parte order be posted at the company’s headquarters and branches nationwide. Additionally, the order should be sent to MultiChoice’s official communication channels, including email and social media platforms.

The tribunal emphasized the importance of ensuring MultiChoice receives the order, underscoring the need for transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
