Leadership plays crucial role in determining victory in battles

By Linus Aleke

The Adjutant General California National Guard in United States of America, Major General David Baldwin has described leadership as key instrument in winning military battles.

Major General Baldwin expressed this expert opinion while delivering a lecture titled Strategies and Operation Leadership:Challenges to participants of Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 2/2018.

He said, “Three things are essential in the business of war. These include leadership that has impact on decision making, spirituality to take care of things beyond control and care of the family who bears the brunt of the military profession as a result of the disposition of military personnel to the service of the nation”.

He said that his engagement team was in Nigeria to dialogue and explore partnership opportunities in areas of building leadership capabilities, and disaster response.

On his part, the Commandant AWCN, Major General EJ Enenche said the college was conceptualised to develop the capacities of Nigerian Army officers in Operational Art including campaign planning management of war as well as development of basic strategic military skills.

He said prior to the establishment of AWCN, several committee were set up more than 10 years ago to come up with modalities for the establishment of the College.

He however said that with the appointment of Lt Gen TY Buratai as the Chief of Army Staff, he took a bold and decisive step to speed-up the process as a result of the observed gaps in the Nigerian Army training curriculum.particularly at the operational level

Maj Gen Enenche further said to ensure that AWCN participants get optimum learning experience during the course programme, the newly purposed built and fully furnished complex was constructed within 6 months.

“The new complex contains 29 offices, 8 syndicate rooms, library, work production centre, war gaming room and lecture hall with about 180 seating capacity supported with 250 K A standby generator and 350 standby generator for the participants respectively.

“Participants were exposed to 8 teaching modules comprising Foundation, National security and Organisation of Defence, Inter-agency Cooperation and Coordination in military History, Operational Art and Campaigning and Peace Support Operation”.
