Maintain Eye Health: Combat and Prevent Dry Eye Syndrome Caused by Prolonged Screen Use

The average American dedicates approximately seven hours a day to screen interaction, a habit that can detrimentally affect eye health. One common repercussion of extended screen time is dry eye syndrome, a condition arising when tears evaporate too rapidly.

Meibomian glands, found along the inner eyelids, secrete a substance that safeguards the eyes by keeping them moisturized. Dr. Jean Carruthers, a clinical professor at the University of British Columbia, explained that normal blinking activates these glands. However, constant screen fixation can reduce blink frequency by up to 66%, leading to gland blockages and eventual harm.

Without a well-maintained tear film, eyes can experience dryness, sensitivity to light, and irritation. Indications of dry eye syndrome include redness, stinging or burning sensations, sensitivity to light, mucus presence, a feeling of foreign objects in the eyes, watery eyes, blurry vision, eye fatigue, and challenges with nighttime driving.

Carruthers suggests four strategies to alleviate dry eye syndrome:

1. **Utilize Eye Drops or Artificial Tears:** These products lubricate eyes, decrease tear evaporation, and facilitate healing. Proper care for contact lenses is crucial if you wear them.

2. **Care for Eyelid Margins:** Inflammation around the roots of eyelashes, known as marginal blepharitis, can lead to meibomian gland blockages and, consequently, dry eye. Regular cleaning of eyelid margins, especially while removing eye makeup, can help prevent this.

3. **Take Regular Screen Breaks:** Adhere to the 20-20-20 rule during lengthy screen sessions. Every 20 minutes, spend 20 seconds focusing on an object 20 feet away to provide a much-needed respite for your eyes.

4. **Consult a Doctor if Necessary:** If dry eye symptoms persist despite employing the above measures, it’s possible that the meibomian glands within the inner eyelids are clogged or damaged, requiring professional attention.

In an era dominated by screens, safeguarding eye health becomes imperative. By adopting these practices, individuals can mitigate the discomfort and potential consequences of dry eye syndrome brought on by excessive screen use.
