Medical Tourism: FCTA set to rehabilitate 14 hospitals

In a bid to curb medical tourism in the nation’s capital, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo has disclosed that the Federal Capital Territory Administration , FCTA, has listed fourteen District hospitals for general rehabilitation and provision of medical equipment in the 2025 budget.

The Health Mandate Secretary disclosed this on Thursday during the unveiling ceremony of the revamped VIP ward named after Nyesom Wike at the Maitama District Hospital, Thursday.

According to her, the initiative is aimed at repositioning the medical centers for efficient medical service delivery to tackle critical health challenges, including medical tourism.

Dr. Fasawe stated that renovation of the VIP ward, named after the FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike which started in Maitama would be extended to the remaining thirteen hospitals to provide a comfortable environment for both patients and doctors.

The mandate secretary revealed that the Nyesom Wike VIP ward will be free for doctors and nurses within the health system.

Fasawe said, “The rehabilitation is to make the hospitals comfortable for both patients and doctors.”

“Well, In the 2025 budget we have captured
fourteen hospitals for rehabilitation, the document after the approval it will give us details of how much is allocated for rehabilitation and provision of equipment in the hospitals.”

“The exercise will cover upgrading and changing of equipment in all the hospitals and primary healthcare centres in the FCT.”

Also speaking, the Acting Director General of the FCT Hospital Management Board, Dr. Olugbenga disclosed that plans are underway to recruit doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, laboratory Scientists and other health workers to complement the initiative.

He said the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike had also approved the replacement of 315 health workers across all the hospitals.

“The Minister of FCT had approved the replacement of 315 health workers across the hospitals, it is now left for the civil service commission to complete the process, and they are working on it” Bello said.
