Meta Sued for $1.6B by Ex-Moderators in Kenya

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Meta faces a significant legal battle in Kenya, where 187 former content moderators, employed by Sama, are seeking $1.6 billion in compensation. Kenya’s Court of Appeal upheld a ruling allowing the moderators to sue Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, for unfair dismissal and harmful working conditions. The legal case, which challenges Meta’s claim of immunity as a foreign company, could lead to a settlement after negotiations stalled in October 2023. If no agreement is reached, the matter will be determined in court, potentially shaping future content moderation practices.
