Miami’s Top Cop Involved in Disturbing Incident, Shoots Himself Hours Later

Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez found himself in a distressing situation on July 23, after being briefly handcuffed during a dispute with his wife, Jody Ramirez, at the JW Marriott hotel in Tampa. A witness had called 911 after witnessing the man point a gun to his head during the argument.

Body camera footage and a police report released by the Tampa Police Department shed light on the initial confrontation. By the time officers arrived, the couple had returned to their hotel room on the 12th floor, and the witness had left. Officers approached the room, shouting commands to come out with hands up, and both Ramirez and his wife complied.

Ramirez expressed confusion and mentioned his position as the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. He denied having pulled out a gun or being a threat to himself or anyone else. Officers questioned Jody Ramirez separately, and she described the dispute as “heated,” acknowledging that her husband carries a gun but asserting that he was not dangerous. She also mentioned his job and the demons he deals with due to it.

After questioning the couple, Alfredo Ramirez was released. He later called Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava around 8:30 p.m. to resign over the incident. During a press conference, Cava stated that she urged him to return home safely, and they would discuss the matter the next day.

Tragically, around 9 p.m., Ramirez pulled over on the side of a freeway south of Tampa and shot himself in the head. His wife made a harrowing 911 call, pleading for help. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where emergency surgery was performed, but he may lose his right eye.

Ramirez, a 27-year police veteran, had been appointed as the head of the largest law enforcement agency in the southeastern U.S. He had also announced his intention to run as a Democrat in the primary for the newly created role of Miami-Dade Sheriff.

The incident has raised concerns about mental health and has led to discussions about Ramirez’s future political aspirations. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol are conducting a joint investigation into the shooting.
