Military declares Nigerian terrorist wanted for Zamfara killings

The Defence Headquarters has issued a wanted notice for terrorist leader Halilu Buzu, a resident of Buzu in the Republic of Niger, who is believed to be involved in the recent spate of violence in Zamfara State.

According to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, Halilu Buzu is based in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State and is known for operating an illegal gold mine in the region. He is also notorious for cattle rustling and arms trafficking activities.

Addressing the media during a bi-weekly briefing on military operations, Buba stated, “Troops are actively engaged in various theatres across the country, targeting terrorist leaders and their cohorts. Halilu Buzu is a high-value target due to his involvement in coordinating attacks against both troops and civilians.”

Buzu, who is reported to have a camp and an illegal gold mine in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, has been implicated in the killing of 19 villagers in Farar Kasa last week.

Describing Halilu Buzu as a significant arms supplier, Buba highlighted his connections to arms dealers in Libya and his frequent escape to Niger when pursued by Nigerian authorities.

In the past week alone, soldiers involved in counter-insurgency operations and other security tasks have eliminated 227 terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, oil thieves, and other criminals. Additionally, they have arrested 529 suspects, rescued 253 hostages, and recovered a substantial amount of weapons and stolen goods.

The recovered items include firearms, ammunition, boats, vehicles, and illegal refining equipment. Troops also prevented oil thefts amounting to over N1.3 billion in the Niger Delta region.

Buba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and criminal activities, emphasizing that troops are resolute in their pursuit of perpetrators and determined to restore peace and security across the nation.

He commended the soldiers for their unwavering dedication and sacrifice in safeguarding the country and pledged continued efforts to neutralize threats to national security.
