Minister Calls for Responsible Road Usage Amid Economic Challenges

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, highlighted the economic challenges inherited by President Bola Tinubu, expressing concern during an inspection of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in Aba, Abia State. Umahi emphasized the need for Nigerians to use public infrastructure responsibly, considering the government’s efforts to improve road conditions.

While inspecting the completed section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Umahi expressed frustration at the activities of street traders, suggesting that Governor Alex Otti establish a task force to address the issue. He urged citizens to support the government’s initiatives and avoid hindering construction efforts.

Umahi stated, “While Mr President is having sleepless nights on how to solve the problems of a very bad inherited economy, Nigerians should support him and also support themselves.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration between citizens and leadership to facilitate the completion of infrastructure projects.

Criticizing the misuse of the completed road, Umahi called for responsible behavior, highlighting issues such as traffic violations, use of roads as car parks, and illegal trading. He recommended the establishment of a task force to address these challenges and ensure the smooth progress of the construction work.

The minister acknowledged the contractor’s efforts, expressing satisfaction with the job done so far. He explained that the project, initiated around ten years ago, faced delays due to the escalating costs of construction materials, such as the significant increase in the price of bitumen.

Umahi suggested exploring alternatives like concrete, which is sourced locally, to mitigate the impact of rising material costs. During the inspection, he emphasized the need for citizens to contribute their share to ensure the success of government projects.

The inspected project covers approximately 57km from Abia Tower in Umuahia to the Railway Crossing at Alaoji in the Osisioma Local Government Area. Additionally, Umahi commended the work done by Setraco Nigeria Limited at the NNPC Mega Filling Station, urging the company to address identified errors in their construction efforts.
