MRA to FG: Act Decisively on Journalists’ Safety in Nigeria

Comply with February 16, 2024 FHC Judgment

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Media Rights Agenda (MRA), an organization dedicated to journalists’ rights and protection, has urged the Federal Government to take decisive steps to safeguard journalists in Nigeria and to comply with a Federal High Court ruling from February 16, 2024.

In a release issued on Saturday, marking the 2024 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, MRA called for immediate action to protect media professionals. The statement urged the Federal Government to adhere to Justice Inyang Ekwo’s ruling, which mandates proactive measures to prevent attacks on journalists, and to investigate, prosecute, and hold accountable those responsible for such crimes.

Ms. Obioma Okonkwo, Head of MRA’s Legal Department, criticized the government’s failure to implement the court’s directives, calling it an “affront to justice and the rule of law.” She highlighted the court’s orders, which require the Federal Government to ensure journalists’ safety and bring attackers to justice.

“The culture of impunity being nurtured by the Federal Government through its failure to enforce the court’s judgment is deeply concerning,” Ms. Okonkwo said, adding that unresolved attacks against journalists weaken public confidence in the rule of law and embolden those seeking to silence the media.

Ms. Okonkwo also urged the government to enact stronger legal protections for journalists and prioritize swift prosecution of crimes against them. She called on media organizations to take proactive measures to protect their staff, fostering a safe and supportive environment for journalists.

“As we commemorate this day, we honor the courage and resilience of journalists who risk their lives to report the truth,” Ms. Okonkwo stated. “We must renew our commitment to ending violence against journalists, ensuring every journalist in Nigeria can work freely and safely.”

“Together, let us build a society where truth-telling is celebrated, and those who seek to harm messengers of truth are held accountable,” the statement concluded.
