NAF Denies Involvement in NNPCL Wellhead Explosion in Rivers

By  Milcah  Tanimu

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has denied involvement in the explosion at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) wellhead in Buguma Community, Rivers State. The NAF called the claims “false and unfounded.”

In a statement, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations, addressed the allegations made by a Buguma Community spokesperson. The spokesperson suggested that the explosion could be due to aging oil facilities, illegal oil bunkering, or NAF operations. The NAF rejected these claims, stating they were incorrect.

The explosion occurred at a wellhead operated by NNPCL. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) is handling the situation.

The NAF clarified that the wellhead had been leaking crude oil due to prolonged illegal activities. Video footage from NAF missions, including high-definition recordings from December 2024, shows the wellhead leaking oil. It also shows a barge already burned before NAF arrived at the site.

NAF emphasized that it carefully checks targets before engaging them. Only illegal refining sites and equipment are destroyed. The NAF also reiterated its commitment to the safety of civilians and protecting critical infrastructure.

“NAF operates with transparency. Protecting civilians is our priority,” the statement concluded.
