Never Eat These 5 Foods Before Exercising If You Want to Avoid Stomach Troubles

By Milcah Tanimu

Eating the wrong foods before exercising can disrupt your workout and cause stomach issues. Here are five foods you should avoid before hitting the gym:

1. Protein Shakes
While protein shakes are popular for muscle growth and recovery, they are not ideal to consume right before a workout. Protein slows down digestion, so it’s better to focus on carbohydrates for energy and smoother digestion pre-workout.

2. Fried Foods
Foods like doughnuts, chips, and puff puff are high in fat and difficult to digest. Consuming these before exercising can lead to reduced blood flow to your muscles and cause feelings of lethargy, making it harder to perform at your best.

3. Dairy Products
Milk, cheese, and yogurt, which contain protein and fat, can upset your stomach, particularly during intense workouts or in hot weather. Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, these can lead to discomfort and nausea.

4. Nuts and Avocados
Though healthy, nuts and avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, which can be heavy and slow to digest. Consuming them before cardio can lead to nausea, heartburn, and bloating, affecting your performance.

5. Cereals and Granola
While fiber-rich cereals and granola are great for health, they can cause digestive issues during a workout. High fiber content can lead to an urgent need to use the restroom, which is less than ideal when you’re exercising.

Avoiding these foods before working out can help you maintain energy, avoid discomfort, and make the most out of your exercise routine.
