In the early hours of New Year’s Day, a devastating fire swept through the Orba International Market in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, destroying shops and merchandise valued at millions of naira. The fire, which ignited around midnight, impacted sections of the market where various items, including drinks, foams, gallons, provisions, and more, are traded.
Orba International Market, situated in the community of Orba, the hometown of former Governor Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi, stands as the second-largest market in Enugu State. Chigbo Odegba, a local resident, reported to journalists that the fire had caused extensive damage to numerous shops and merchandise worth millions of naira. Another resident, Chinyere Eze, expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that the affected shop owners were not present at the time of the fire.
The Chief Fire Officer of the state, Mr. Daniel Ohaa, confirmed the fire incident and expressed gratitude that the swift response of fire service operatives, assisted by residents, prevented further destruction. Two fire trucks were deployed to quench the flames, with Ohaa acknowledging the significant role of the nearby fire service office in Orba in facilitating the rescue operations.
Despite the losses incurred, the timely intervention helped salvage a considerable portion of the market from the destructive blaze.
