NiDCOM Resolves Over 1,000 Petitions in Five Years – Dabiri-Erewa

By Abigail Philip David

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has resolved more than 1,000 petitions over the past five years. These cases addressed emergencies, stranded citizens, consular issues, trafficking, and deportations, highlighting the Commission’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.

Established in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, NiDCOM has also worked to foster diaspora investments and strengthen connections between Nigeria and its citizens overseas.

In a statement released on Friday by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Public Relations Unit, Dabiri-Erewa expressed gratitude for the agency’s contributions despite challenges. She credited the Commission’s success to its dedicated staff and outlined her hopes for a brighter future.

“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has handled over 1,000 petitions ranging from emergencies, stranded citizens, consular issues, trafficking, and deportations. We’ve also witnessed increased diaspora investments in Nigeria,” she said.

Challenges and Aspirations

Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the hurdles faced by NiDCOM but remained optimistic about its ability to improve and expand its services.

Dr. Sule Bassi, Secretary to the Commission, emphasized the staff’s crucial role in engaging the diaspora, attracting investments, safeguarding Nigerians abroad, and promoting Nigeria’s image globally.

While recognizing the challenges, Bassi expressed confidence in NiDCOM’s ability to deliver effective services and strengthen its impact in the years to come.
