Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, announced the Republic of Niger’s reintegration into the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). This step aims to enhance efforts to combat insurgency. The announcement followed actions led by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa.
During a briefing in Abuja, Abubakar highlighted the government’s focus on the welfare of the Armed Forces. He emphasized the need for proper training and equipment to maintain readiness against Nigeria’s security challenges.
The Minister stated, “We will equip our Armed Forces with combat capabilities. Our goal is to minimize casualties during operations.”
He also noted President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act. This law empowers DICON to produce and manage ammunition supplies, creating a reliable military supply chain.
Abubakar stressed that revitalizing DICON represents a significant step toward national pride and self-sufficiency. He called on businesses and individuals to invest in DICON for local production of defense equipment. This initiative aims to save costs by reducing reliance on imports.
He mentioned new partnerships between DICON, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), and the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. These collaborations will establish a munitions production facility, enhancing Nigeria’s security while boosting the economy.
The 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration will include several activities. These include a Humanitarian Day, an Emblem Launch by President Tinubu, and religious services. The event will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Arcade in Abuja on January 15, 2025. State governors will also participate in similar ceremonies in their states.
